Today marked a milestone for many in Dare County including my own household, the start of Preschool. It was last week for the many other grade levels. So since we all have kids on the brain, I thought I’d share some of my favorite kid’s room inspirations and family-friendly brands. Also the steps I take to getting that picture perfect Kids Room.
Steps to Designing the Perfect Kids Room:
Whether your child is a Newborn or a Teen the first step is the same- BUDGET! Establish a budget that fits what you want from the furniture.
The Next Step is to determine what you want for the room. Are you thinking a completed overhaul… Floor to the ceiling? Are you just upgrading furnishings… finally? Are you adding a sibling to the room? Or maybe you just want to create a milestone around graduating from the Little bed? Grab ideas from Pinterest, Houzz, or Instagram to get ideas for fun themes or stunning styles.
Next, you need to think about the things your child has now as well as the future. I feel of all the rooms in your home, a child’s room has to evolve easily. Accommodate the comforts for newborns, the toys for toddlers, the desk for a tween, and so on. Having furniture that changes with your child is always a popular choice, however, that’s not always the right choice either. For example- Most cribs change from a Crib & Toddler bed to a Full-Size bed. Make sure that will fit your plan or your space.
Now- Think Organization. This is the thing we all know helps any space. I’m a bit Utilitarian in my design mind here. Just because it’s cute on Pinterest… doesn’t mean it’s useful or safe. Start with the basics- Storage for Clothes and Toys and branch out from there. Consider Loft Beds or Storage beds if you have a small space but need storage. This is also a great time to purge the room of old things not needed for the new space!
Ask the littles for their opinion too. I think this absolutely applies to tweens & teens, but consider making it a fun family event. Older children love the opportunity to use their room as a way to express themselves. Have pre-established rules like (We’re NOT painting the walls) Do your homework and perhaps propose 2 or 3 themes you approve.
So let’s Recap the steps:
- Establish a Plan for the room
- Think about the future too.
- Ged Organized
- Ask the kids
Now call in the pros and get started.
